Our Wobbling Earth, staggered by the World Weather
If it runs, the Earth wobbles as it rotates on its axis. And when it slows, the planet develops a host of different wobbles, ranging in time from a few minutes to billions of years.
The mystery of why the position of the poles of the Earth wobbles with 7 meter is solved by a NASA scientist. The wobbling, a 433-day cycle, was discovered by astronomer Seth Chandler in 1891, but nobody could explain it. It is known, rightly as the Chandler wobble.
It seems that changes in the pressure on the ocean crust cause the wobble.
The earth vibrates at certain resonant frequencies. Small shifts in ocean circulation, caused by changes in the wind and the sea salinity, affect the water pressure on the crust. This pressure change in turn changes one of the natural vibration frequencies of the earth, making it wobble.
There is also an annual wobble caused by the attraction of the Sun and the Moon as the Earth revolves around the Sun through the years, tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees to the axis of rotation of the earth.
The daily rotation of the planet creates a bulge at the equator, and the gravity of the Sun and the Moon tends to pull the bulge back into the orbital plane.
But the Earth tends to oppose this cut as it hurtles around the track. Consequently, the axis moves in a cone-shaped pattern, called precession, the celestial North Pole complete a full circle every 26,000 years or less. As we north celestial pole talking points to Polaris, the Pole, but it is used to refer to Vega, and in 14,000 years will once again point at Vega. During this time tilt the earth remains 23.5 degrees.
These two together can tilt axis of the earth to wobble 30 meter from its normal axis.
However, minor variations, have permanent or one weeks Sun, proved difficult to study, partly because they are camouflaged by the more prominent wobbles. Now scientists say changes in weather cause small wobbles in the planet spin. From November 2005 until February 2006, the Chandler and annual wobbles pretty much canceled each other out. This allowed the scientists to study the small changes. Using GPS Data the exact location of the poles, those clever boffins found that world weather patterns play an important role in the small wobbles.
The location of the cyclone and anti-cyclone centers and the relationship of these high and low pressure systems to each other played a measurable role in the production of small, short-term wobbles. These systems caused the pole positions to swing in small loops ranging from a few centimeters to several centimeters. The study also proved that the ocean pressure variations also coincided with these small polar loops.
So It seems that from day to day changes in the weather of the world has a small but clear and measurable, effect on the rotation of the earth.
