Acoustic Cameras used to catch Criminals
A shot goes off into the night. By the time the responding officer arrives, it can be difficult for the reporting parties to recall which direction it came.
In areas with a high degree of gunfire, cities are installing acoustic gunshot detection systems. These sensors not only determine the difference between a car and shot a backlash, but then sends information back to a sophisticated system that triangulates identify where the potential suspect may be. This confirmation of gunfire and the immediate determination of the possible location for members to respond quickly to shoot with a much higher level of confidence.
In some cities these acoustic gunshot detection systems have been married to video surveillance; example, a zoom video camera directly to a location where gun fire is detected, the display of the suspect information, and record events immediately after the shot was fired. This information is then processed in a command center, located at the station. The command center includes video monitors for the video surveillance system and has the ability to download recorded video to a DVD or CD to be used later as evidence.
Manufacturers gunshot detection systems expect the technology to the ability of police to the scene of random gunfire quickly, increasing the number of people arrested for firing of weapons, and reduce the harmful effects (injuries, fear, divestments) of shots are fired in urban environments. As with any new technology, it can evolve and be used for other purposes. For those who fight in the street sounds and not just the crime could, it is possible these systems help track noisy offenders who exceed the legal noise at night, which everyone at least a decent night's sleep.
