What are you looking for in your next camera lens?
It is true that in principle all lenses have only one function - let the light in the camera and the focus to a sharp image to the sensor (or film) - but not to the importance of choosing the right lens for the photography that you're interested
Are you in landscape photography? If so, the wide-angle lens - usually 18mm-35mm - can be what you need. The 20mm is also very popular for shooting landscapes (as well as working in small spaces indoors, or shoot architecture or groups of people. A 20mm f/2.8, for example, is ideal for shooting in low light and is quite a fast lens.
If you enjoy nature photography You will, no doubt, you want a telephoto lens. 70mm-300mm, 100mm, 400mm and others are available. There are 1.4x and 2x tele-extenders can attach to the end of your telephoto 400mm lens you will turn into a 560mm or 800mm lens. To view the digital image, it gets even better! If your remote stretches out to 400mm and your camera ratio is 1.6 + - you really are on c.640mm - and Adding a 1.4x tele-extender is a colossal c.896mm! Now if you screw this same lens and a 2x tele-extender on the end you are c.1280mm!
That's way out to achieve - taking account a number of great opportunities - but you need a solid tripod for sharp images. You will not handholding this setup! And you will manually focusing.
You are more interested in portrait photography. If so - and your digital images - you can have a 85mm prime lens might be a selection - for your recordings. Maybe a medium telephoto, like a 24mm-70mm, would you flexibility you need for a little variety.
Do you like getting 'up close and personal "with macro photography? Then a macro lens can be slightly for yours. Many of the standard lens - 100mm macro, like Canon or Nikon 105mm f/2.8D are excellent for focusing within inches of your minor subject. There are too expensive ways to get even closer - perhaps with a 58mm close up lens 500D - that screws right near the end of the macro lens. Of course, if you have time and resources can be in serious macro shooting with the stands, bellows, ring-Lites, etc. More time - more money - but awesome pictures!
Event photography is your passion? Now you have both focal length and speed consider. You have enough focal length to withdraw the action, and a sufficiently large aperture to stop in its tracks! Many professionals have a very large prime lens - that is say 600mm f / 4. This is the action of pulling a great distance and the ability to shoot with a fast shutter speed - without which you will not end with the sharpest images. This lenses do awesome things - and the price they cost - they should. But you can do great event photography without breaking the bank!
So many lenses - so little time
Yeah, whatever area of photography you enjoy, there is a lens for you. Select the lens you use it. Select the best quality you can afford -, and get there and get shooting!
