York was once the capital of the country, and has a breathtaking history and wealth of restored medieval buildings and streets. The city has its name from the province in which they live, and is home to 13,000 people.

But York is much more than a beautiful old city, is home to a vibrant cafe culture and array of fine restaurants. The shops are numerous, and there are more independent retailers represented here than in any other modern city in the country. The city even a busy night life, with a wide selection of pubs, clubs and live music.

York's creative spaces and rooms are another good reason to visit, and art facilities housed in St Mary's Church is a unique tourist attraction in itself.

With dozens of museums, sporting venues and restaurants, hundreds of stores, B'n'Bs and quality hotels and on every street, York attracts thousands of tourists annually and rewards each of them!

History

The ancient city of York has an exciting history more than any other region of the United Kingdom. The city was founded in AD71, and was the site of the coronation of Emperor Constantine the Great. The city less important during the Industrial Revolution meant that old buildings are not raised to room for factories and mills to make, and an abundance of medieval structures exist still.

The Jorvik Museum is one of the fifty museums and heritage centers in the city, and explores the Viking history of the area. Viking streets are reconstructed for a underground tour, and there are masses of archaeological finds and objects.

The National Railway Museum, The Castle Museum, The York Dungeon and The Richard III Museum are just some of the others.

The city is also home to the largest Gothic church in the country, thirteenth century church and many other medieval ruins.

Art Galleries

York Art Gallery is home to oil and canvas art, watercolors and ceramics from the fourteenth century to the present. The collection is divided into six thematic areas: Morality, dedication, Places, People, and Modern Aproaches stories, and there are regular temporary exhibitions.

York St Mary's desanctified is a medieval church that used to house a different artwork each year. The installations are inspired by the building, and each adds something to the atmosphere. Installation for 2007 will examine the relationship between the viewer, the artist and the natural world, and is developed by Keiko Mukaide.

The Artspace is a studio and art gallery, with new exhibitions every six weeks.

Theaters

The Grand Opera House is an elegant, restored, nineteenth-century building, hosting performances of drama, dance, comedy and music. The theater is said that the greatest in Yorkshire.

The Royal York Theater seats nearly 1,000 people and presents a program of drama, comedy, musicals, live music and stand-up comedy. The theater is under renovation but still open for business.

Friargate Theater is the home of a Christian group, Touring productions and regularly showcases small.

Restaurants

The Biltmore Bar and Grill is located in a church desanctified, grills and serves drinks in the bistro, and traditional dishes on the mezzanine. The interior is modern and chic, and the prices are a little above average.

Rarity offers meat and fish, and a wide selection of red, white and rosé wines, champagnes and vintage ports.

The Mogul has received glowing reviews from customers and critics for his Bengali cuisine and warm atmosphere. The restaurant trade for fourteen years, and offers a catering service.

For high quality Italian food in traditional, upmarket area, and in view of York Minster, La Vecchia Scuola is the ideal choice.

Pubs / Bars

York is known plenty of cafes, and many interesting historic buildings. Ye Old Starre Inn has tenth century cellar and many ghost stories. The pub is acting in a variety of beers and beers, with regularly changing guest beers.

York city center is a free car network of back streets, cobbled lanes and medieval streets, filled with unique shops and curios. Copper Gate is the place to find high street chains, and Swine Gate is home to designer boutiques and restaurants.

Monk's Cross is the newest of the city's shopping, and includes all the leading retailers, an interactive game for children in 1000 and feature free parking. Clifton Moor Shopping Center is home to 34 shops and 3,000 parking spaces.

The McArthur Glen Designer Outlet Trade in excess inventory, and retail designer goods at 50-75% of the RRP. Current retailers include Dolce and Gabbana, Paul Smith and Armani.

Sports
