Drying and preserving flowers with silica gel
From prom corsages to bridal bouquets, birthday congratulations bouquet roses, people often want to preserve their flowers. Hanging the to air dry flowers is a popular method, but it may be unreliable and not always the best results.
Drying flowers with silica gel resulting in more vibrant colors and shapes better preserved than air drying. Silica Gel is an absorbent material that is used to remove moisture from the air in closed spaces. Silica gel is usually found packed in small white packets found in products like electronics and vitamins. Surrounding a flower with Crystal Flower Drying removes the moisture from the much faster then to dry air. This results in more vivid colors and better preservation of the Flower Shape. With the Flower Drying Crystals also minimizes the possibility of a fungus grows on the flowers during the drying process, which is common to air dry. Mixed with the white Silica Gel Indicating Beads are amber beads. These beads are green when they become saturated, indicating when the Silica Gel should be activated. Steps:
1. Select a container, the container should:
- Either glass or plastic
- Has an airtight lid
- Be large enough for the flowers suitable for drying
2. Put a layer of flower drying crystals in the bottom of the container
- The layer must be 1 to 2 cm, depending on the size of the flower (s)
- The Flower Drying Crystals are distributed evenly across the bottom of the container
3. Place the flower (s) on the Flower Drying Crystals
- Flowers should be placed up
- If there are different kinds of flowers, they should be dried in separate containers as different thicknesses petal require different drying times
4. Gently cover the flower (s) with the remaining Flower Drying Crystals
- Pour the flower drying crystals than along the side of the container, shake it gently to spread them
- Flower Drying Crystals Carefully place on top of a petal exposed surfaces
5. Place the lid on the container and let it sit until completely dry
- Make sure the lid on tight, the flower drying crystals absorb moisture from the air which can dry slowly
- Drying up to one weeks, depending on the flower (s)
6. Once dry, carefully remove the Flower Drying Crystals from the flower (s) and the flower (s) to be taken from the container
- Flower Drying Crystals Pour slowly into another container
- Use a clean water color brush to remove the remaining crystals from between the petals
7. Enjoy!
Flower Drying Crystals not only give you beautiful dried flowers, they are also suitable for reuse. Place the crystals in an oven safe pan and heat for 60 minutes at 250 °. Allow them to cool and then store in an airtight container at reuse. Indicating the beads, which may have changed color during the drying flower, will be back to orange when heated in the oven turn.
