Peonies 'Krinkled White' and 'Vivid Rose'
Add Old-Fashioned Beauty Your Garden
Peonies have an old-fashioned beauty and life that they have a firm favorite of gardeners. Before introduced into North America thousands of years ago they were grown in gardens around the world. There is evidence Peonies that were used for medical purposes in Europe and more than 2000 years ago during the reign of Emperor Yang (605-617) in China they were grown as ornamental plants. Peonies were in North America during the 1830s and their popularity has only increased since then. This week, we have two of our favorite Peonies - 'Krinkled White' and 'Vivid Rose. "
"Krinkled White '
"Krinkled White" is a simple and classic Peony - large single, snow-white petals around a cushion of rich golden stamens and pistils green. "Krinkled White" is a nice contrast with the more usual double flowering varieties. The wavy-edge, crepe-like petals form a bowl shape that can reach 5 to 7 inches wide. The stems are straight and strong and do not flop in the garden. "Krinkled White "is ideal for a cut flower display. Easy to grow and a prolific bloomer.
'Vivid Rose'
'Vivid Rose' has large, fully double, brilliant pink flowers that actually glow in the garden! Introduced in 1952 by the famous Klehm family, remains a favorite of gardeners not only for its beautiful flowers, but for the wonderful sweet fragrance. The bloom may reach 6 to 8 inches wide. As with "Krinkled White ',' Vivid Rose 'has also stiff stems with disease-resistant, crinkled deep green foliage that stays right in the autumn.
Planting and Care
Both 'Krinkled White' and 'Vivid Rose' is very hardy and once established, are one of the longest living perennials available - for a period of more over 50 years! Expect to reach about 30 inches high, with the beautiful display of flowers in spring. The magazine is a nice round lump - making the Peonies more shrubs than perennials. By reducing the opening stage almost all the way up in the water and take about one weeks inside. Cut flowers do not, the first or second years. Make sure that faded flowers to prevent seed formation.
Early to mid fall is the best time to plant Peonies should be possible to have their roots to establish. Your peony will spend his first year getting established and will not be free flowering.
- Prefers an area with full sun but will tolerate some shade. Good drainage is essential. Alkaline soil is preferred but not essential.
- Mix lot of compost, such as Chesapeake Blue, into the soil to plant. Fertilize with Bulb-Tone in early for years. If plants do not put fertilizer directly to plant roots, but in the soil away from the roots. Peonies should be fertilized again slightly after flowering.
- Plant the "eyes" exactly 1 1 / 2 inches below ground level. Water and immediately after planting.
- Mulch with 2 inches of shredded hardwood mulch after ground has frozen. Remove the mulch in early spring.
- Hardy in zones 3-8.
